This half day session will cover four different topics and allow lots of time for questions and discussion. Its objective is to describe tools and practices helpful to individuals who have leadership roles in IT projects. There will be four separate topics:
- Using Consultants Successfully on Your IT Projects
You can do things from the early project planning through the post-implementation review to make the most of working with consultants and contractors on your IT projects. This session discusses how vendors look at your RFPs and Qs and what you can do to create a successful relationship. Glenn Briskin of Sierra Systems, who has many years IT project management experience as both a state employee and as a contractor, is the presenter.
- Project Management Institute (PMI) Resources for IT Project Managers
The Project Management Institute is a globally recognized resource for project management leadership and certification. Many people enter project management on IT projects without formal training. The PMI and its Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) can be a valuable resource as a comprehensive resource for managing any project. The PMBOK is the ANSI recognized standard for project management practices. A representative of PMI will present on PMI and the PMBOK as a resource to IT managers.

Many of your organizations have adopted or seek to implement a project management environment that supports effective IT project management. This may include policies, standard practices, and automation that fosters good documentation, tracking, and communications on projects. Garin Pangburn, a project manager with Critical Path Technical Services, will present on what to consider when establishing a project management environment from practices to automated tools. CPTS is a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider and has a series of project management products that integrate with MS Project.
